Korea, competing with advance countries in IT, BT, and NT, is expanding support for these areas, but key problems for fundamental technologies in these areas must be often solved with high-end computational science technologies. For such purposes, for example, representative applied math centers of the US, IMA(Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications) in the university of Minnesota and IPAM(Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) in the UCLA are developing programs based on perception of importance of advanced scientific computing in solving problems of IT, BT, and NT. The central components of the 4th industrial revolution, which is often mentioned as a great issue these days, are artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and improvement of hardware.

AI represented by machine learning and data science represented by big data are bringing about the 4th industrial revolution and development of related computational science fields such as graph theory, computational statistics, agent-based modeling, and adaptive model. Processors, whose speed looked improving infinitely in the past, are now developed as multi-core types like GPUs or many cores due to physical limits such as temperature and size, and this enables parallel computing, which was possible only on clusters or supercomputers, on laptops or smart phones being used easily by every area, not only science. In addition, the current society becoming more and more data-intensive requires fast calculation definitely and demands parallel computing more, and ubiquity of cloud computing such as AWS and Azure popularizes parallel high-performance computing. Therefore, computational science and mathematics are more important in this age of the 4th industrial revolution. To develop these areas, Korea should actively introduce and utilize advanced scientific computing technologies and foster human resources integrating the advanced fields.for them.

As utilization of high-performance scientific computing in major US national laboratories such as Argonne National Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, Brookhaven National Lab, and Oak Ridge National Lab, and company laboratories of USA and Europe meets academic, military and commercial purposes to lead education of human resources for organized development of computational science in western universities, Korea should produce such human resources through IPCST. Scientific computing experts trained by this program will go every place in society, where advanced scientific computing is necessary, such as domestic or overseas companies, their institutes, institutes related to national defense or resources, and meteorological administration. Some people experienced diversely in industries or institutes will come back to the academic circle to accelerate fusion of related disciplines.
