Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards and Global Change
Center for Earth Observing and Space Research
George Mason University
The Earth is increasingly subject to hazards, either from natural causes or anthropogenic influences. As global climate change seems to be proceeding, such hazards take on particular significance for societies. All hazards produce atmospheric signatures which are the result of atmopshere-ocean-land interactions and couplings. Tropical cyclones, floods, forest fires, harmful algal blooms, anthropogenic pollution, and possibly even earthquakes, can be studied by using remote sensing observations from multisensor platforms and often by running models, to analyze, track and forecast such hazards. We will examine how current and future technologies can assist in providing information to mitigate the risk of hazards.
